Rating is an evaluation of the future ability of a company to pay interest and repay principal on borrowed money. In effect it is an estimate and a statement on creditworthiness as seen by one’s creditors.
Basel II requires a more stringent examination of risk and provides guidelines for the structure of the internal rating used by banks.
For companies this means that they will be rated by their own bank. Based on particular criteria, the credit terms for loans are set.
